Is laser welding really stronger?

Inquire

In the automotive sector, this term was first applied to China by Volkswagen and has a history of more than ten years. In the mouth of the salesperson, that is the primary reason why Volkswagen is robust, and many friends around me even prefer Volkswagen because of this "safer" laser welding.

Laser welding

    What is the laser welding?

What is laser welding, exactly? Is that very good, as the marketing says? In basic terms, welding is a permanent bond between two metal parts. Resistance welding is primarily used in automotive construction. Since the welding field is dot-shaped, it is often called spot welding. As for our protagonist currently, laser welding is a comparatively limited process, and the proportion used in the industry is still not high.

What is the laser welding

Spot welding is to press the metal to be welded between the electrodes, and then to use the electrical current to heat the metal, so that the two metal parts are welded, there are as much as 5000 welding points on the car frame, and the figure can also be used. The rigidity of the frame is specifically affected. As for laser welding, two metal parts are locally heated and laser melted for welding, so the laser welding is continuous.

From the consumer's point of view, laser welding is constant, while spot welding is only point-shaped. Obviously, the former is going to be more accurate. The real influence, however, is not absolute. According to science testing results, when the width of the melt is 1mm, the welding duration must be 19-20mm and the laser welding will attain the power of the spot welding. That is, only when laser welding is long enough can it produce better tensile efficiency than spot welding.

In reality, laser welding is not applied to the welding of the whole engine. Much of them are clustered on roofs and side walls. Laser welding is mostly used here for more glamorous appearance and better sealing, and to measure whether a car is safe, it depends mostly on whether the frame construction is sound.

Is laser welding just seen by the general public?

When it comes to laser welding, everybody has to think about the public first, after all, they have done a lot of publicity and advertising. In reality, not only do the public know how to play laser welding in many car factories, such as Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Peugeot, Nissan and other car makers, have used this technology.

Laser welding is no longer a high-tech tool for most automotive companies. The explanation that most manufacturers are still focusing on spot welding depends more on the configuration of their manufacturing lines and the construction of the frame. After all, the laser welding is pretty good. The danger to workers is incredibly large and special sealed manufacturing areas need to be created. For old factories, such modifications can easily be made from time to time. Laser welding will also provide improved sealing and sound insulation efficiency, and the welding area is indeed more exquisite, but its contribution to the strength of the car body is not a jump and cannot impact the protection of the car body. This is a place that needs to be emphasized.
