What is CNC Laser Cutting?

Inquire

Aser Cutting is the process by which the laser beam is used to vaporize, melt or otherwise eventually extract the material. Computer Numerical Control (CNC) Laser Cutting typically uses optics, an assist gas, and a guidance device to aim and concentrate the laser beam on the workpiece. Many of the advantages of CNC Laser Cutting include:

    • Speed.

    • Less waste.

    • Broad Range of Materials.

Although Laser Cutting has been used industrially since the early 1970s, CNC Laser Cutting has recently become a manufacturing tool of choice for manufacturers, schools and hobbyists.

Why can I use CNC Laser Cutting?

CNC Laser Cutting feature:

    • Faster processing and output time.

    • Minimal deformation.

    • Greater precision relative to Blaze or Plasma Cutting.

    • More parts per layer of material attributable to the limited cutting diameter of the laser beam (kerf).

    • Nice for fabrics, however heavier and denser materials can be sliced by replacing the collimating lens in order to adjust the focal point of the laser.

CNC Laser Cutting has many benefits over Flame, Plasma, and Waterjet Cutting. As the application of the laser heat is closely oriented, it demands less power and decreases the heat-affected zone (HAZ) of the object. Many high-end commercial laser cutting devices have an accuracy of up to 10 micrometers and a repeatability of 5 micrometers. CNC lasers can be used to cut and etch a wide range of materials, including non-metallic materials that cannot usually be cut by Flame or Plasma methods.

How CNC Laser Cut Works

Laser beams are created by electrically exciting lasing materials. This beam is internally mirrored and intensified with a partial mirror within its bottle. Once it has produced enough energy to exit the bottle, it may be guided to the workpiece. Three primary types of laser are used for CNC laser cutting:

    • Carbon dioxide (CO₂)

    • Neodymium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet (Nd:YAG, or YAG)

    • Fiber

CO2 and YAG Lasers are identical in nature but are used differently. C02 Lower power lasers are used for engraving, whereas higher power lasers are used in industrial applications for welding and cutting due to their comparatively low price. YAG Lasers, with their higher peak performance, produce excellent results for metal marking and etching. Fiber lasers, with their solid-state structure and high-power performance, minimize consumable costs and efficiently reduce a wide range of materials.
