In the process of laser cutting, the positioning of the laser focus is a very critical step. Only when the focus is aligned can a good cutting quality be guaranteed. When we use the laser cutting machine, we need to choose different focus modes according to the processing needs of different workpieces. Let's share the position relationship between the focus and the workpiece in the laser cutting process.

The laser cutting machine uses a focusing mirror to focus a high-power laser beam to form a small focus, and then uses the high energy of the focus to melt and vaporize the steel plate to achieve cutting. The distance of processing the focal length on the upper surface of the workpiece is usually referred to as focusing on the upper and lower parts of the workpiece.

The significance of the focus position: changing the focus position means changing the size of the spot, which increases the focus distance, thickens the spot, and widens the gap, which affects the heating area, focus distance, and slag discharge volume.

The focal position of the laser cutting machine is on the surface of the workpiece

This method is the most common focus position, also known as zero focal length. It is often used to cut SPC/SPH/SS41 and other workpieces. When using, let the laser cutting machine focus close to the surface of the workpiece.

In this mode, due to the slight difference in the smoothness of the upper and lower surfaces of the workpiece, the cut surface of the side close to the focus will be smoother. Conversely, the cut surface of the side far away from the focus will be rougher. In actual use, often It will be determined according to the different process requirements of the upper and lower surfaces.

The focus position of the laser cutting machine is inside the workpiece

This method is called positive focal length, and is generally used when cutting stainless steel or aluminum steel plate and other materials, so that the cutting focus is located inside the workpiece.

The main disadvantage of this method is the cutting amplitude, and this mode often requires more powerful cutting airflow, sufficient temperature, and longer cutting and piercing time. Therefore, it should only be used when cutting harder materials such as stainless steel or aluminum.

The focus position of the laser cutting machine is on the workpiece

This method is also called negative focal length, because the position of the cutting point is neither on the surface nor inside of the workpiece, but is positioned above the cutting material.

Generally, when this type of focus is used, it is because the thickness of the sheet is relatively high. If the focus is not positioned in this way, it may cause insufficient oxygen delivered by the nozzle, resulting in a decrease in the cutting temperature and the inability to cut the material. However, a significant disadvantage of this method is that the cutting surface is rough, which is not suitable for precision cutting.

It can be seen that in laser cutting, choosing different focus modes according to the processing needs of different workpieces can give full play to the performance advantages of the laser cutting machine and ensure the cutting effect.
