Laser engraving is the process of removing material from the top surface to a certain depth. (See Figure 1 for more information.)

The optimum engraving depth and speed are determined by the substrate type and laser power level. Shallow laser engraving is usually a simpler method than deep laser engraving. Furthermore, lower density materials engrave on quickly than medium density materials. In general, increasing the laser power level increases laser engraving efficiency.

CO2 lasers with a wavelength of 10.6 microns are mainly used for material removal and engraving non-metal materials.

Since most laser energy is mirrored, CO2 lasers are not commonly used for metal engraving. Fiber lasers with a wavelength of 1.06 microns, on the other hand, can be used for shallow engraving into metal.

Learn that laser technology is an excellent method for achieving tight tolerance requirements when used as a laser cutter, as well as how laser technology allows distinctive design characteristics when used as a laser engraver or laser marker.
